My last class of the period!!

On Wednesday the 20th   I had my third and last class with Intermediate II.

I entered the class and started by having a little chat with my students, even though I was kind of sick I continued with the development of the class. I began with a warm up activity as I always do. This time; I asked my students to come to the front and take a piece of paper and a pen with them. Then they formed a circle, I explained to them that they were to write in each classmate´s back and that I was to dictate some sentences(related with the topic I was to teach) so while I was dictating they had to be going around in a circle. It was really fun because they could barely write as they were moving but I could notice they enjoy that activity.

After that I moved to the presentation part; I introduced the topic by presenting a family tree, then I asked for vocabulary about family members and students started to mention the ones they knew already. That part went pretty fine, and I think the rest of the class went well as well, I gave some fill in the blank practice, and they also were asked to write sentences about what they have been studying. Something I consider I need to improve is to be “present” in the whole class; I mean to monitor students in every moment of my class, I think sometimes I do not monitor them as I should. So I would appreciate if you share with me some tips on how to control or to keep an eye in all my students. The teacher mentioned that part because while I was pasting some charts on the board some students were talking to each other, so I would like to know, what things should I do while I am pasting visuals aids on my class?

Summing up, I can say my teaching experience has been good up to know because I am gaining more confident when being in front of a class.

Waiting for your comments guys…

  1. Dear Mary, while reading your blog I was imagin the warm up...jajaja as you know we used to enjoy a lot those kind of kinesthetic warm ups!!! I am really sure that your Ss had fun too...Well, with your concern about how to keep an eye on them, my advice can be that instead of you pasting the flashcards or material on the board, why don´t you change the perspective...I mean make the activity more participative, ask them to do the whole work...(without notice it ok) and in that way you will have 2 things...their attention and their participation as well....I hope it helps you baby!!!
Don´t worry anymore, what is done is done!!! now we have to charge batteries to face the Second period with our best desire....here we go dear Mary!!!!

  2. Hello Mary!!...
Nice question btw. What I normally do is to paste the aid until I am going to use it. This allows you to keep an eye on your students and get them focused on each item you are pasting.
To monitor students, it is something we must do even if they seem to understand you just need to remmember to walk around an say "questions???" and check if they are struggleling with something. Sometimes this is difficult because is a matter of remmeber to do it, but I guess with the practice you will accomplish it..!!!

  3. hello Mary!

Well, I had the opportunity to be with you in your practices, I also liked the last warm up activity, I could see how the students got fun, indeed, it was funny; i also saw teacher Ovidio´s face, he was laughing watching the students that they could not write the sentences. It was cool Mary, you looked very confident!!

  4. What's up Mary! you're doing pretty fine. I see your class was active, which is something good for the environment. When pasting visual aids, in this case, if te previous activity was a fill-in-the blankactivity, you should have pasted them in that moment(while the students were working) so that the material was ready. If not, at least you should have pasted just the masking tape. In regards with monitoring, just walk around, and, from time to time, ask if there is any question or doubts. I think next time you will do it as it monitoring is somethin that gradually becomes part of the process. Bravo Mary!

  5. Hi Mary!!! I like the activity you did as a warm up, I´m sure that your students enjoyed it. As we know some of the things that we as teachers should try to do in every moment of the class is monitoring. In my case I had the same problem, there were some moments in which students started to speak in Spanish or talked about other things that weren´t related to the class.
But I´m sure that through this, experience we are going to learn how to overcome those situations.
